Are you a Jersey City Resident? We’d like to hear from you about how superfast internet connections can change the way you do things. Can you create a new project or try a new system or offer a new service or do better research? Can you get groceries faster or look for jobs or find training? The options are endless. Please post your comments, thoughts, and wildest dreams here.
Dependable, affordable high speed Internet access will allow me to do my job better.
Right now, my incumbent provider (C@mca$t) does a crummy job and I think that they do not have any incentive to a) lower the cost, b) provide better customer service, and c) provide consistent reliable access. I have yet to have my current provider show up on time for an appointment.
My internet service is frequently “down.”
Having the ability to work from home is important and directly relates to my standard of living (I would be able to perform a higher level of work and more work — which translates into more pay).
If Jersey City were to become a “test city” for Google, this would instantly transform us into a top destination for business and the arts.
I’m so excited about the prospect of a gigabyte internet connection to my house I’m hyperventilating. OK, I’m better now. As a photographer it will allow me to offer a better turn around time for my customers saving time and money. I could feasibly look into better online solutions for my whole work flow. Imagine shooting an event and uploading all photos to a secure website. then minutes after the shoot – edit those same photos with online editing software and shoot my client an email with the URL and secure logon and password. They could choose to print from one of many online printers and have the prints they choose the next day.
As an IT Manager for The School of American Ballet, I can always be just a remote session away from the office and my servers and workstations.
And as a aspiring entrepreneur, I can have a much larger canvas for my ideas
This is hard to believe. My children will be able to access the Internet and get valuable information for school. It also would help the schools in the community by saving them money for IT troubleshooters. Right now they are spending tens of thousands to keep their labs up and running. Super idea.
This is a great idea! I work in Jersey City for a major real estate developer. This is the type of service that would increase interest in the downtown neighborhood as a place to live, work and conduct business. This is a plus for attracting new businesses and residential customers. And that translates to new tax money for the city!
It is especially exciting for small business owners when considering a place to do business.
As a homeowner in Jersey City,I cannot say enough about how much this would do to put us on the map!
The diversity of Jersey City is a great test market for Google. Go Google… bring it on! Chilltown, Wall Street West, The West Bank…no matter what you call it, we are a viable marketplace with a great future!
Besides benefits for me and my work and hobbies, partnering with google for ultra-high-speed internet would bring great business and entrepreneurs to JC! We’ve a growing community, filled with all sorts of people and ideas – artists, jerky-cookers, gardeners, jewelry makers, bankers, green entrepreneurs… The more business we can attract, the better off we’ll be. And for me? I just want to see our community thrive!
I use Sprint’s mobile card as I dislike the quality, price and customer support of the local wireline provider (Comcast). However, Sprint’s mobile Internet is also not ideal, even though better than Comcast’s.
High speed Internet availability should benefit a great deal to kids and schools. Our kids are growing up in a much different communication/information environment than their parents have, and at times it is even too difficult for us as parents to imagine all the ways that they would benefit from better Internet access. What is, however, evident is that better Internet will enable teachers to use online as a way to incorporate additional leaning into kid’s lives – a web conference with kids in Africa, ability to watch educational video online with the entire class, for older kids ability to work on their laptops in school.
If Jersey City had ULTRA-FAST Broadband availability at a reasonable and affordable price, residents could establish “Real-Time” community interfaces within local websites. This could lead to more community involvement, better community safety, less crime, more municipal accountability, more residential participation in local government, and (if done correctly,) less crime amd greater municipal revenue.
With the adoption of dedicated NEW bandwidth, (out of areas of unused Digital Television spectrum)could allow Ultra-High Speed Broadband internet access to create a Hot Spot city within our municipality!
Jersey City was one of the first urban areas in the United States to offer up “High Speed DSL” when you were still CAPABLE OF PURCHASING A “CLASS C” I.P.LICENSE.
Any commercial retailer operation within the United States would be attracted quickly to the opportunity of setting up their distribution centers here as long as this location (geographically) and the cost of the real estate was not a deterrent to the operation of the particular business.
Domestic customer service centers (yes, there are still companies that depend on employees that do not reside in New Delhi and Bamgalore)would have an incentive to locate here.
Currently the cost of internet access within the United States is about three times that of the true internet accessible countries like SWEDEN and South Korea. These countries have access speeds that are much faster than us, as well!
In the past six months I had technician coming out four times to fix the “problem” with my speedy Comcast. Poor guys don’t even know where to start because it is always somewhere outside. Lots of construction going on in the area is one of the comments, I am being tired of all the excuses. We watch tv thru computer and would love to have something that actually works.
Whaaa? Gigabit Ethernet? SOLD! This is the type of profound change that could uplift our neighborhoods by empowering our current residents, instead of displacing them with rich people from somewhere else. Our neighbor, NYC is overflowing, and every so often “Luxury Highrise” builders offer/threaten to tear down or take over fragile city blocks to make room for short-sighted investments. Yet, despite the recession, the neighborhoods in JC are slowly getting stronger on their own from neighbors lending each other a hand and small businesses helping each other.
Gigabit Ethernet would help everyone in JC who has some entrepreneur spirit. I’m an artist and an educator and this would help my work with interactive video and allow me to teach and mentor more young people online.
My husband who runs, with his father, a small printshop that’s been in their family for 60 years, would be able to turn around more large files from customers. If they were able to do just a slightly higher volume of business, his father might be able to retire.
It would help my neighbors on the block nearby where cars and apartments have been broken into frequently: instead of using expensive security system companies, they’d be able to mod their own affordable webcams to make sure their living rooms and bedrooms are safe.
Come on Google, we need you!
I work from home in Jersey City in an internet based business, and this would be the most incredible thing for us. Having this kind of access for us not only makes good business sense, but it will draw people from NYC to our city, raise our profile and make us the ‘go to’ place to be! Across the board there would be benefits.
For me, it would allow my business to flourish… the gains I could make with the extra time and efficiency would be exponential! Jersey City design companies can stand side by side with those of NYC!
Come on Google… we are perfect for you… cheaper than NYC, but on its doorstep, so you will have access to all NYers without the outrageous NYC costs involved… and we ARE the perfect next ‘happening’ place!
Yes please! Jersey City is a wonderful place to live, and full of high tech minded people who would love super-high speed Internet! I know our household full of computers and gadgets would take full advantage of this, and we would be proud to partner with Google on such an awesome project!
I’m currently involved in Art House’s JC Fridays and the Grassroots Community space as the host of the Just Add Sound open mic. (2nd Friday of every month, 9-11, 54 Coles St! Come on out!)
If you’ve never heard of it, JC Fridays are a night of dance parties, art events, gallery openings, open studios, performances, and more, that happen every few months. It’s a really awesome event, and similar events, like the DUMBO Festival in Brooklyn, have done a lot to promote the area and convince people to move there.
With Google’s new fiber optic system, I would pick up a bunch of inexpensive webcams and distribute them to all the JC Fridays participants and have them stream the content from their events to the web. All the videos would be watchable on one big JC Fridays website.
I would also live stream the content from Just Add Sound to the web so anyone, anywhere could become an audience for the considerable artistic talent of Jersey City.
When Google chooses Jersey City to test its gigabit network, our city will become even more attractive to both reside in and do business in. This translates to an increase in the value of our properties, thus higher revenues for the city, leading to more funding for our community in which we so dearly care about.
Not only will this attract more residents, but more importantly, attract more businesses that will provide better services and employ more jobs for our city. The tax revenues alone from these new businesses will provide the funding for improved roads, infrastructure, transportation, schools, programs and parks.
Through a socioeconomical standpoint, Google’s service will make it cheaper for those who wouldn’t normally be able to afford high-speed internet access. This will enhance our schools, providing a higher standard of education and help our small businesses to become more competitive. Google’s gigabit high-speed internet service will create such a positive externality that it will revolutionize this city and ultimately raise all of our standards of living.
Having a faster Internet connection would mean I’d be able to swoop down on a decent-paying 9-to-5 on the job boards, research the company, spit out an eye-popping cover letter and hit the “Apply” button before my competition across the Hudson. It’ll be enough to take my breath away! That excellent bread ‘n butter job would support my real passion: writing heart-thumping urban erotica before twilight descends on Harsimus Cove.
Higher speeds on the ‘Net would mean I could conduct research for my short stories and my novel-in-progress with the speed of sound. Considering the crashing and slow pacing that I currently experience with Comcast, it’s easy for me to lose the flow of a plot action — or for a character to lose the thrust of her desire — by the time the research is done.
I love life in the fast lane; at least, my fictional characters do. So, Google, please select Jersey City as the test site for your high-speed optical fiber! Thanks!

We have a large number of professionals across various industries living in this city that could provide you with valuable insights on usage patterns. I believe we have large number of early adopters of web technologies, including myself, that are involved in social networks and innovative ways to leverage the web. We are one of the few metropolitan with true urban environment, I believe most cities in the US are more geographically spread out and would cost more for you to deploy the infrastructure to get the desired population count.
So pick us as a great urban test ground for your service!

On a personal level I always welcome highspeed connectivity that allows a higher level of service but also for other businesses / community groups in Jersey City to be able to utilize high speed internet to improve efficencies in order grow to their full potential.
Jersey City would be a prime candidate for this pilot program. Being a densly populated area with many diverse backgrounds will provide a very extensive array of feedback in a multitude of levels.
Jersey City is quickly becoming a preferred residential location for the “technically” upscale . As a retired marketing executive I use the Internet all day, every day, for projects ranging from creative videos for “You Tube” to managing health, financial and other personal issues – as well as for occasional extra income. Many work almost exclusively online. Jersey City would be the perfect setting with the perfect range of tenant/homeowner profiles, uniquely qualified for the task of testing Google’s superfast Internet connection .
My wife runs a Graphic Deign business from home, and I’m an IT Director for a school in NYC. My wife would be able to upload and exchange large files with collaborators, clients, and other designers easily in real time, while holding virtual meetings using crystal-clear video chat. I would be able to telecommute and manage servers, do remote help sessions on individual computers and manage my school’s network in real time while keeping VOIP or video chat sessions open with my staff. This would allow my wife to work more productively, and allow me to continue to work efficiently from when our baby is sick or daycare is closed and he needs one of us to watch him.
Of course, having always-available streaming video feeds of our baby to his great grandfather is the priceless reason
But on a larger scale, given JC’s status as an up and coming revitalized urban area, a historic and important city with an economically and culturally diverse population, and a city that would benefit immeasurably from the draw it would provide for new and relocating businesses.
Go Google!
Would be nice to have Google come into our community of Society Hill 1, 2 & Droyers Point, Jersey City
Oh, and another thing: Verizon offers high speed FiOS to some, but *not* all houses in the city, sometimes even inexplicably skipping buildings on a block for no reason! Comcast is of course infamous for Bandwidth Capping at 250G in an effort to drive people away from streaming video/iTunes/legally purchased digital downloads and back to cable box-ordered pay-per-view video features; this is about as competition killing, innovation killing and anticompetitive as it gets! Someone needs to break the chokehold that these companies has on Jersey City – Google’s presence would throw some much needed gas on the dwindling fires of innovative, open and competitive ISP products services being offered in Jersey City.
With DSL and 4 computers at home, the connections are not that fast when the kids are searching the internet for their homework, I am usually uploading videos for clients and my wife is checking Ebay.
The speed slows to a crawl.
With Google hi-speed we will be able to perform better.
My kids will get A pluses in their assignments
I will get kudos on videos uploaded
My wife will buy faster (Is that good?)
But Google fast speed internet will be beneficial for all the Jersey City residents, e-commerce will flourish and we will get more and better informed.
We need it here!!!
It would allow us to do anything and everything!
I need the bandwidth to multitask from home. Speeds are bad and it is impossible to work when you have multiple devices content for bandwidth.
Jersey City would be a great place to see immediate benefits for a program like this- it would be a boon to home based businesses, but it would also make the internet more available for many families who currently don’t have any access at all. There is no incentive for local providers to make the service more affordable. For myself, I would use the service to continue a internet-based job search, and to publicize my artwork, and to keep in touch with my far away relatives.
I have a home-based travel agency, 2 kids and I’m an active member of the community & schools. By having this AWESOME faster internet connection, I would be able to get my work done faster! I’d be able to send my clients larger files when I’m sending out invoices and quotes because the connection would be faster and I wouldn’t get so frustrated waiting for them to transmit. I’d be able to achieve more in my community by having more time in the day. It really would greatly enhance my quality of life if I had this Super Google Internet and I could then be Super Mom!!! PLEASE PICK JERSEY CITY – WE NEED YOU.

I can’t think of a better way to taking a step towards improving our vibrant, growing community. A few personal uses:
– work from home on my business
– will help my daughter and all her JC friends with homework
– order groceries from the park
– quickly search all the exciting happenings in JC anywhere, anytime
Please choose us!
Volunteer my unused computer power and bandwidth to work for medical projects like AIDS or cancer research or studying climate change.
We could provide high speed internet access to every high school and middle school student theough the public school system in Jersey City to ensure our students are the most tech savvy in the country. Not only would this expand their individual horizons, it can be used in course work and will make them highly desired work force entrants and college applicants.
At present, the providers of broadband (with perhaps the exception of FiOS) have limited bandwith that they offer. Webhosting or other needs can easily consume presently available bandwith. In addition, present speeds limit fast download/uploads of sizable amounts of data/files/graphic heavy webpages.
Perhaps as important is the fact that present providers offer horrible customer service. In consideration of how Google operates, having a customer-centric based business model would go very very far here in Jersey City.
Given Jersey City’s fast growth and with demographics more reflective of a computer literate population, higher speeds and greater bandwith would be a desire of those likely to move here now and in the future.
A fast dependable internet will allow me to do a better job for the small dot-org I work for from home that defends press freedom globally. Currently I have a cable modem and the cost is outrageously high and service spotty. I need a reliable and fast internet connection to update the website and communicate with journalists in far-flung places.
In addition, we have family in Western and Eastern Europe. Because of lack of time and money, we don’t get to visit as often as we’d like. To bridge the distance, we Skype at least once a week, typically on the weekend when Skype is packed. Our connection is slow and often interrupted. As we look forward to our family growing in Jersey City, we need to stay in touch with our relatives so they are a part of this growth.
In JC, our cable television options are very limited. We don’t have access to VZ Fios, AT&T U-verse, Time Warner Cable or really any providers outside of Comcast.
Today, television networks enable viewing content online. Leveraging Hulu or brand sites offering all their shows online, a user can get their TV viewing in new ways. With a high-speed internet connection that was not directly tied to a cable provider, I would gladly cancel my cable TV and rely on Google to provide me internet access, and in-turn, my “TV” as well.
With Google’s new mobile phone offering, I’d leverage the internet to make mobile calls and consume “tv” via mobile wifi as well. Goodbye cable & cell providers – hello Google.
Being an owner of multiple properties in downtown JC, it will be very beneficial to have this broadband offering by Google. It will definitely drive the real estate value up.
I would be able to lower my stress level and do work from home as my career is based on online content.
For optimum performance of streaming music, videos and more, high speed internet is a must! On top of that, I would know plenty of people that would use this as a selling point to move to Jersey City!
Having an optimum performing search portal would help me save more of my most valuable asset – “time”. Jersey City is a prime candidate for this service and I hope our great city makes the cut.
With such huge senior population in Jersey City many are home bound, their only source of entertainment is staying online a good part of waking hours or sleepless nights. It would surprise you how many seniors are up after hours on their PC’s
From the internet we can , view the latest news reports: sports, TV SHOWS, MUSIC, google information about different political
views ALSO historical events from the google search machine. I guess I could go on-and on
apparently there are lots of folks who are already connected and would appreciate enhanced speed, convenience, and reliability as well as more price competition. i agree. however, it’s also important to me to bear in mind that…
1. there are plenty of folks in jersey city who are not connected at all or have very limited access via half hour at a time shared PCs at the library, etc. we have our own digital divide problems right here, and this would be a good venue for exploring solutions to those problems.
2. there are a variety of applications in areas of traffic monitoring, public safety, pubic administration etc, that are probably not taking full advantage of Internet technology that would be more cost effective if they did and ubiquitous connectivity would be a big help.
3. jersey city is very diverse. we have a variety of cultural backgrounds, income levels, education levels, building and neighborhood types, technological sophistication. it’s not a complete cross section of america. as far as i know we don’t have a working farm, and may be missing some other stuff, but it’s still a pretty good cross section of a lot of america. if you’re looking for a representative test bed you could do a lot worse.
4. our diverse community includes many with technical and entrepreneurial smarts and many with needs. a highly accessable network might bring some of these folks together in ways that lead to new innovative services.
Let’s use this opportunity to close the American technolgy divide right here in Jersey City. Ours is a city of extreme wealth and extreme poverty, and through technological advances like Google’s One Gigabit Per Second we can help bridge that gap through education.
Let’s face it, our city’s children don’t have equal access to computers, let alone highspeed internet, but with Google as a partner we can open our schools and libraries and community centers to our children and let them experience the cutting edge of technology.
I would work with existing community groups like United Way, Big Brother/Big Sister, Scouts and CASA that are connected to our youth and foster a coalition of resources, mentors and tutors to help bring our children to the forefront of 21st century technology.
Let’s see what we can do together.
You get it!!! This is where the benefit needs to be materialized.
Great!
Competition is good! Jersey City would benefit tremendously. I use Comcast and am unhappy with the service. I’m not interested in FIOS and would look forward to Google coming in.
oops.
i left education off my list of municipal applications that would benefit.
major omission.
afterthought:
local innovators including those in the non-prof sector and those experimenting in a residential setting would probably benefit from less restrictive terms of service than those offered by the current dominant local broadband provider.
currently we can’t have static ip addresses, use dynamic dns, or operate any kind of “public service” at home which means if you’ve got an idea and just want to hack together a crude prototype at home and try it out with a few friends you probably can’t, or at least not easily.
i’m running up against this myself.
Comcast sucks with expensive service and pathetic speed… FiOS is not in every part of the city yet so cannot comment on it but DSL speed seems inadequate in today’s world, so need a genuine high speed at affordable price, hence welcome Google to Jersey City.
Comcast monopoly needs to end which does not live up to the price we pay for their worst service
I am so excited that Jersey City will compete for the Google High Speed Internet. Basically, I hate the cable internet I have now. Very unstable. With this high speed internet, I will be able to share HD video and have much better quality video call with my parents in China.
For the past few years I have been designing a online learning community for my local school. There have been some bumps in the road though, mostly related to bandwidth and internet speed. Google can help me and my students by developing the online infrastructure of Jersey City.
Our neighborhood sits between the former World Trade Center, the Status of Liberty, and the historic Heights. It is a fluid and diverse collection of telecommuters, developers, shop owners, entrepreneurs, artists, students, and back-office Wall Street workers. People from all over the world who value technology and new opportunities. Each draws on the business and cultural pulse of New York City. We’re a tight-knit community with an urban appeal, ideas, and creativity. We’re the politically active “30 and 40 somethings” who are looking to engage.
My personal goal would be to break down cultural barriers while celebrating the social diversity though interactive video networks in classrooms connected to Google’s backbone. Bandwidth to freely exchange ideas, interact with local schools, and to inspire and engage students through art, stories, and teachers. I have a personal goal to connect classrooms, hallways, and lunchrooms in the same time zone in different countries with interactive video walls. To allow the “man on the street” to talk to one another without media filtering and with network neutrality.
Jersey City is going through a transformation that would greatly benefit from highly productive, highly efficient networking infrastructure. It is not just about “internet” but about the building blocks of communication: voice, data, media, business connectivity, information exchange, synergy, education, the list is long. We are community rich in booming small businesses, professionals, entrepreneurs and young families which will find this initiative of great use. For all the above, there is no better place for Google to pilot the project than in the young, diverse and fast growing Jersey City.
This can improve the quality of communications in our city.
I have a side business of Mortage closings and when company’s call I have to know the area’s quickly or I could say yes to a closeing 2 or any 3 hours away and for the same price as one two blocks away. So If I could get faster thaen Verizon Broadband that would be great.
Joyce
As a resident of Jersey City since 1975, the fastest internet in America would allow me to confidently continue to invest my time, energy and money in Jersey City. My childhood is in Jersey City. My memories are in Jersey City. My future is in Jersey City.
Jersey City needs more and better choices in internet providers. A great deal of the city has access to only one provider, and the speeds and service are terrible, especially for those who don’t choose huge packages of digital cable and phone services. I don’t need that stuff, I just need the net!
I am just starting my own photography business, and fast internet speeds would allow me to spend less time uploading my work and more time focusing on my clients and following new leads.
Please Google, come rescue our city from the grasping hands of the single provider monopoly!
Supper high speed internet bring the real time distributed education and health care into reality. The boundaries of schools and hospitals will be transferred from defined by geo-location to defined by their expertise and services. As a resident, I don’t have to pay for the high cost in a good school zone to get me kids the high quality educations. A real open education / health care systems can only be built on the high speed/multimedia infrastructure.
We have very few choices of internet providers in Jersey City. For my home office needs, DSL is not good enough. We are a small, densely populated City and I imagine that we are a perfect advertisement for Google–>since we’re right across from Manhattan.
Please come and help us, Google!
My citizen comments to the proposal regarding high-speed Internet access in Jersey City are as follows.
Enabling high-speed Internet access across Jersey City is a wonderful convenience for those who have access outside Jersey City, such as at work, etc. But bringing high-speed broadband access to JC residents who do not otherwise have high-speed access is more than just a convenience. At this writing, Barnes & Noble in Hoboken is closing its doors, and many other outlets for print media — such as public libraries — are reducing access due to budgetary and other constraints. Electronic forms of information are supplanting hard-copy forms, and government should protect against less-affluent populations being denied access to knowledge. And, lastly, enabling high-speed access for Jersey City is crucial for protecting the vibrant business environment in “Wall Street West” and its surrounding neighborhoods.
I am interested in seeing if I can build a web service with a social conscience that provides address data to a iPhone and Blackberry application. The application is meant to encourage people to shop with their feet – that is to identify political causes they believe in and to support those business that they agree with. Using public data of charity and political donations, the application would send a subscriber information about their location and the people around them who support causes they believe in.
I’ve had Verizon ISDN, then DSL, the Comcast Coax and they’ve all been rather poor. I installed recently Verizon FIOS and that has been very good and fast. For the first time I can reasonably download video. Now that I have this super fast line, we could really find a few new services to put it to good use. If google has some idea that would be great.
First, some research:
Analysis on US Online Video Statistics For Oct ’09:
“When it comes to absolute numbers, 0.13 billion unique viewers viewed 11.22 billion streams in October ’09 according to the Nielsen. These numbers convey that each unique viewer viewed 81 video streams online spending 212.5 minutes in the month of October.”

Think how fast your videos will be delivered; the stream will become the rapids.
After reading the comments from my neighbors, I see that I’m not the only one who thinks Comcast is too slow. I’d love to have speedy access to the internet.
If Jersey City administration gets on board, perhaps they can have the council chambers rewired and we could not only see meetings, but participate. I can’t get downtown, but I’d love to be able to voice my opinion on some of their decisions, like voting against having city placards on city cars! But I digress.
Jersey City is a constantly changing community with 70 languages being spoken throughout the city. High speed internet would be helpful in classrooms where teacher and students could use computer translators to quickly and more easily communicate. I’m sure our highly educated teaching staff would utilize the fastest internet in America in every classroom, thus producing students even more computer savvy.
Please consider Jersey City to be your test city. Thank you.
Need it for faster gathering of information
I would not hesitate to turn the computer back on if I forgot to do something or
look up information. Going through the whole process of logging on and waiting is
sometimes a hassle.
Because we have a Google phone and use calendar and mail and everything else and we think you guys are really smart.
Because if the next thing is as good as the last things, it will help my kids find their best selves as they grow and learn in a place where immediate, reliable access to the vast outside world is as common and easy to use as a fork.
Because JC is a wild and wonderful place for this– big enough to prove a point, small enough to be manageable, and right next door to the Big Apple–also a pretty good place.
It is an improvement and a change so I am all for it. As a student at NJCU and a future teacher, I am experimenting with and learning to use some of the classroom tools that Google has to offer and they are excellent. They offer a good product and service. Also, faster connection and browsing speed would increase instruction time.
Greetings! I think that this is a great opportunity for our dear city! As does everyone, I enjoy the internet greatly. I hope that we win this competition, then we shall see what wonderful fruits can be reaped by this advance. Go Jersey City!
Would love to have this in JC, It would be great for the community.
Our Comcast service is way too slow for even basic tasks. I can not imagine how local business deals with these slow speeds. Jersey City is a very diverse community that would be a perfect test case for Google’s high speed connection. Also Jersey City’s proximity to NYC will give this project lots of great press and enable easier transition into offering servives to NYC.
Jersey City would be the perfect pilot for Google to test its new high speed internet platform. As the largest City in New Jersey and one of the fastest growing cities in the northeast, Jersey City is a bustling center for business and commerce as well as a complex, diverse and muli-cultural residential enclave. Unfortunatley, however, over the past 10 years, Jersey City’s population growth has outstripped the pace of improvmement in civic infrastructure. As such, while there are many ISP’s to choose from, bandwidth is often spotty – especially during peak hours. This not only affects productivity for businesses, but it also deprives residents of precious time with their families at home on the weekends. A faster, more reliable internet connection would allow tens of thousands of people to “take back that time”.
This would amazing for the community! Comcast in my net provider and it’s super slow. I waste so much time and get so frustrated. I pay way too much for way to slow of a connection! Jersey City residents need this.. and deserve this!!! FINGERS CROSSED!
As a Jersey City resident, I’d love to have a faster internet connection at an affordable rate. As someone who owns a laptop that is almost 5 years old, my internet connection is very slow, and it’s frustrating. I have Verizon’s older DSL connection (FiOS is way too expensive and unnecessary, in my opinion!), and I rely on the internet for job-related searches as well as personal use. I happen to use Google for e-mail and for all of my searches, so it makes sense to go to the next step and have Google high-speed internet!
As a graduate student, I depend on the internet for keeping in contact with professors, colleagues, viewing class materials, and conducting research. High speed internet will allow me to work from home more frequently and be more productive. This is a wonderful opportunity that will benefit Jersey City residents immensely!
Both my husband and I work from home frequently and it would benefit us greatly to have a quicker, smoother internet connection. This would be a great thing for Jersey City!
I say being this close to NYC makes us the obvious choice. Hook us up!
My Husband and I both frequently work from home. Frankly, every second counts. The more we can get done and the faster we can do it, the more time we have to spend with one another and with our new daughter. Our (scant) leisure time would be improved since downloads and pleasure surfing would take less time.
Perhaps the most important thing (to Google) would be that with faster Internet, we’d be able to brag (and frankly, rub it in), to all our friends and family in other areas. Hah! Told you Jersey City was cool! (And then they’d all want the faster service when it became available in their areas.)
Pick us! Pick us! Pick us!
Awesome, everyone needs high speed internet. Lots of people use it for lots of reasons here. I am a teacher. Recently, I have been following the TEDxNYED conference, but as a teacher living in Jersey City, this is where I do most of my internet work.
Working from home is especially common in Jersey City. Even more important, Jersey City’s diversity both economical and ethnically is an opportunity to improve the lives of the much needed kids and adults by offering access to high speed internet.
My husband is a photographer and he is dissatisfied with with Comcast “fast” access we now have. In the rainstorm last weekend, we had no internet on and off and in the most resent snow storm, we had no internet at all. I also have a home business that relies on the internet, as do several of my neighbors. When it is slow or down, all productivity stops. Jersey City has a major medical center, many grammar and high schools and several colleges and universities. It has big business (Goldman Sachs) and small businesses and it would be the perfect sample to test the service. We also have a high profile and many of us work in Manhattan.
I would take more online training classes to advance my career. I would watch more videos and sports programs online. They are slow right now. My son would be able to use better educational programs and games. Because they are not too fast right now, he is not too excited.
I trade equity, fixed income and derivative securities from my home. This type of service should increase my trading execution. I would love the opportunity to test that out.
It would be awsome to have high speed Internet from Google. It would provide a much needed service for those who cannot affort it and offer technology to those who need it most. I totally suport Jersey City’s nomination for the honor of being one of the first communities with Google Internet.
I am extremely excited about the prospect Google offers Jersey City. Jersey City has been developing small businesses at a very high rate. The high speed internet offered by Google would help in this economic recovery. It gives Jersey City an opportunity to develop independence from NYC and create a paradigm for the rest of New Jersey to look for a new type of economic growth. The high speed internet from Google would give small businesses in Jersey City an edge in the new economy at a time when many small businesses are at a serious disadvantage globally. The new 2010 census will probably show Jersey City has the greatest growth of any other large urban community in the state of New Jersey as well as providing an enormous diversity of people and backgrounds. This could be a fantastic opportunity for Google to begin a footprint is such an energetic and diverse community. The opportunity for important feedback is mind-boggling. I’m very excited about the social and political ramifications of such a partnership and sincerely hope it happens.
This will allow me and my family to maximize the full potential of the internet such as: streaming data (video, news, music, etc.) to our home network including TV, super fast response to online gaming, hold video conferences without the video delays, send data fast to anywhere….the advantages are truly beneficial!
I am constantly researching, shopping, talking to family in the UK/Ireland, and learning on the internet. Even some of my every day tasks are now being done “on the web”, from grocery shopping, to finding restaurant menus, to researching how to get involved in the community. My current service is slow, so having a super-fast internet connection would immensly improve my life as well as the lives of all the JC residents! And, JC is a prime candidate for such a program as it is in a very densly populated area with a very diverse mix of folks who can give great feedback on how the super high speed internet has changed their lives.
Google, Please “Pick Jersey City (JC)!” Why?
P Pilgrims: JC represents the new frontier
I Incubate: Speed = more entrepreneurial opportunities
C Conundrum: The puzzling could be, Why NOT JC?
K Kaleidoscope: The Diversity of JC residents
J Jete: JC residents would leap for joy!
C Coup: For Google and for JC workers and Residents
Thanks!
Absolutely, Jersey City NJ deserves the Google Broadband for reasons below
1. Wall St Proximity
2. Data Centers
3. Density & Diversity
4. Access to largest Market in US in 400 mile radius
Go for it Jersey baby!!
I am a graphic design professional one of many diverse professionals in JC, when working from my home office the speed and productivity of google’s new internet service would be invaluable to my work.
Jersey City would greatly benefit!!! A high speed Jersey City would help facilitate and activate community groups and residents, so that messages get out and received!
Also, there are many schools in Jersey City that would greatly benefit from the cost savings. They could then put those payments towards better resources to our students. Also the students would have home access and will benefit their education.
What a wonderful world it would be!!!
The internet is the greatest tool I have- and to have it turbo charged- WOW that would make my live even better!
I can play my games faster and get off the computer faster so i can spend time with my wife and kid. The Service i have now is constantly going down, lagging and that leads to me being frustrated and wife nagging me to get off. So you could imagine if i faster internet, my life would be peaceful!!!
I’m in. Comcast or Comcrap is abysmal. Internet without walls the way it should be.
A myriad of opportunities for personal business growth lie within. Jersey city could use the publicity. This seems to have a great deal of upside. I would like to know the potential drawbacks. It appears is at least worth a shot.
As a councilman in Jersey City it would be great to have an added differentiator when exploring new business opportunities for the city and also gauging its impact on existing schools, universities, and infrastructure.
On the business front, Jersey City offers many advantages from a competitive standpoint today; however the Google aspect would be an added dimension that could possibly attract new business. Personally, I would look to leverage this point and assess how enticing it truly is for prospective businesses (comapring new business that decide to open versus historic similar business that have passed) to have cutting edge infrastructure in the place they choose to do business. The information the city can gain from this will shape future investments, partners, and dollars spent.
From a existing government infrastructure standpoint, the most interesting aspect of this opportunity is seeing how we can leverage faster access to information to enhance the educational experience in our schools and deliver better constituent services through the use of a faster open platform
As part of the downtown community, I know of many neighborhood, health, educational and municipal apps that could be made possible with 1Gig FTTH. As a principal in a startup, there are uses we would have too if JC was selected by Google for their test and roll-out. I look forward to hearing that we have made the cut as we share a cultural diversity, un-used dark fiber, mature infrastructure and public transit that exceeds any applicant.Lastly, Jersey City is indeed the world and as said elsewhere here, “Deploy it here and you can deploy it everywhere.”
Faster internet now! I’m tired of hearing about how much faster the internet is in Japan and South Korea.
it’s definitely time to have another choice from the crap service of comcast. nothing but good can come from this. being right across the river from NYC makes us the perfect community to test this new service!
Six years ago I started a public access show here in Jersey City called “Mamarama” about being a parent. Though it’s great to be on cable television clearly the future of my show resides on the web. I am creating content that can only be accessed via the internet and super high-speed would be an amazing way to kick off the launch! Everyone would benefit. Incidentally, Jersey City is a great community with folks from every ethnic and socio-economic background you could imagine. Plus we are right outside New York City, so our influences and influence are sophisticated, yet urban and gritty. I cannot think of a better community with which to test-drive this project!
I live and work in Jersey city. At home: being able to send and receive files faster is an exciting prospect. Sending pictures and videos to family across the country would be great.
At work: I work in higher education. Faculty and administrators are barely able to keep up with students’ tech savvy, and our bandwidth can’t possibly keep pace with exponentially expanding applications on the web.
Are you kidding me? What wouldn’t I do! I would do everything I do faster and have more time to eat, shop, play and take in our awesome views of NYC!
Did someone say faster Internet? I am all for empowering the current residents. Where do we sign up? Instead of changing the neighbourhoods by carting in the rich, we need to provide resources for current population and maintain the diversity. I am a long term resident and a parent, with an entrepreneural spirit. Am I excited? You bet! There are so many possibilities. Bringing a much needed technology boost to the public school system can only lead to better things. This is a very good reason for starting my own health food business. By improving the variety of businesses in the area we boost the economy.
